چکیده

GOCE gravity fields are assessed in an area around Reykjanes Ridge. Ship gravity measurements were found to be to inaccurate to determine possible improvement of GOCE gravity field models compared to the best available GRACE gravity field model. Differences between the GOCE gravity field models and EGM2008 does not appear to contain a component of the mid-ocean ridge signal. However the differences follow the Greenland coastline, which could indicate small errors in EGM 2008 there as a result of piecing together different gravity field observations. A Butterworth bandpass filter was applied to gradiometer observations at orbit height. After filtering, differences between repeat tracks with a magnitude of tens of mE are present, which can not be explained by position or attitude of the satellite. In order to reach the repeatability that can be expected from GOCE measurements, filtering methods need to improve. It was found that differences between global GRACE and GOCE gravity field models are small compared to uncertainty in crustal and upper mantle structure. Thus, geophysical inversion studies should focus on the gravity gradient observations in the instrument reference frame and at orbit height.

Petrology, geochemistry, and petrogenesis of mafic dykes from the Kermanshah Ophiolite in Sahneh-Harsin area of Western Iran

The Kermanshah ophiolite complex is a part of the Mediterranean–Zagros–Oman Tethyan ophiolites, located in the structural–tectonic zone of western Iran in the northern part of the Zagros main thrust. Doleritic sheeted dykes are well exposed within the ophiolite in the south of Sahneh. These dykes contain high MgO, Na2O, low TiO2 (2O5, and K2O contents, and high FeOt/MgO and LILE/HFSE ratios. The Crustal Structure

This thesis consists of three papers examining problems related to the crustal structure, isostasy and subsidence history of aseismic ridges and mid-plate island chains. Analysis of gravity and bathymetry data across the Ninetyeast and eastern Walvis Ridges indicates these features are locally compensated by an overthickening of the oceanic crust. Maximum crustal thicknesses are 15-30 km. The w...

Magmatic filtering of mantle compositions at mid-ocean-ridge volcanoes

Earth’s dominant form of magmatism occurs at mid-ocean ridges (MORs), producing the igneous crust for two-thirds of the planet’s surface and conveying significant heat and material fluxes from the mantle to the world’s oceans. Mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) magmas form from upwelling compositionally heterogeneous mantle1 by aggregation of near-fractional melts beneath spreading centres2. Multipl...

Axial Structure of Fast Spreading Mid - Ocean Ridges : Implications for Overlapping Spreading Centers

Studies of the structure of mid-ocean ridges and the processes involved at these accreting plate boundaries have played an important role in the development of plate tectonics models over the last two decades. During this time our concept of the accretion/spreading process has evolved from a two-dimensional, steady-state picture to a three dimensional, time-dependent view of the volcanism and r...
